It’s Never Too Late to…Develop an Outrageous Mindset

When was the last time you did something that felt a little outrageous? Not reckless or destructive, but bold, daring and exciting. The kind of action that made your heart race because it nudged you right out of your comfort zone and into possibility.

If your answer is “not recently” (or maybe even “never”), I want you to know this: it’s never too late to develop an outrageous mindset.

What do I mean by outrageous?

For me, outrageous is not about being wild for the sake of it. It is about choosing to go beyond what feels safe and expected. It is about breaking the rules you have unconsciously set for yourself, the “I could never do that” or “People like me don’t get to…” stories.

An outrageous mindset is the opposite of settling. It is saying yes to opportunities, even when they feel scary. It is daring to dream bigger, speak louder and live braver.

Why does this matter, especially in midlife?

Because midlife can sneak up on us. One day you wake up and realise you have been living according to everyone else’s expectations, whether that is family, work or society, and you have forgotten what it means to want something outrageous for yourself.

But here is the thing. Outrageousness brings energy. It shakes off the cobwebs. It sparks confidence. And it opens doors you did not even know were there.

When you develop an outrageous mindset, you stop asking for permission and start writing your own rulebook.

So, how do you begin?

Here are a few ways to start building your outrageous mindset muscle:

Challenge your “shoulds.” Notice where you are living by rules that do not belong to you. Do you “have to” behave a certain way, take on every responsibility, or tone yourself down? Ask yourself: Who said?

Take one bold step a week. Outrageous does not mean turning your whole life upside down overnight. It can be as simple as speaking up in a meeting, pitching yourself for a new opportunity, or finally saying no when you mean no.

Surround yourself with expanders. Spend time in rooms, either virtual or in-person, with people who are already playing big. When you see others being bold, it normalises it for you too.

Reframe fear as fuel. That fluttery nervousness before you do something new is not a stop sign. It is proof that you are stretching. Lean into it.

Celebrate every outrageous move. Keep track of the times you have been braver than usual. Celebrate them, no matter how small, because each one builds evidence that you are capable of more.

The benefits

When you start to think and act outrageously, you will:

  • Feel more confident and alive

  • Create opportunities that would not have existed if you had stayed safe

  • Inspire others, including your family, colleagues and friends, to be bolder too

  • Build resilience, because once you have done one outrageous thing, the next one feels easier

Final thought

Outrageous is where the breakthroughs live. It is never too late to step into that energy, whether you are 40, 50, 60 or beyond.
